Education and the Youth are part of Tonga’s strongest driving factors for development and key leveraging points for change. With the Family Life Education in development, Tonga is committed to empowering girls and young people to make informed decisions on their sexual and reproductive health and rights. By 2030, the Family Life Education component will become a staple item in Tonga’s curriculum and will pave the way for the realization of the rights of both young women and men.
(8) Investing in the education, employment opportunities, health, including family planning and sexual and reproductive health services, of adolescents and youth, especially girls, so as to fully harness the promises of the demographic dividend.
In this time of such pressing global crises such as Climate Change – integrating MISP into disaster responses and building Tonga’s capacity to cater to GBV cases in emergencies is vital and crucial to maintaining stability in times of chaos. Tonga is committed to ensuring that the security of nation’s future is secured with more resilient and responsive systems in place to cater for people’s needs during emergencies and natural disasters.
(5) (a) Zero sexual and gender-based violence and harmful practices, including zero child, early and forced marriage, as well as zero female genital mutilation; and (b) Elimination of all forms of discrimination against all women and girls, in order to realize all individuals’ full socio-economic potential.
The Kingdom of Tonga commits to having zero sexual and gender-based violence by 2030 and onward with optimism. The issue of GBV is one that requires real investment and multi-sector collaboration. With endeavors such as the development of the service delivery protocol and referral pathways and strengthening existing systems in place – the vision for Tonga to address the enormous issue of GBV is looking positive.
(5) (a) Zero sexual and gender-based violence and harmful practices, including zero child, early and forced marriage, as well as zero female genital mutilation; and (b) Elimination of all forms of discrimination against all women and girls, in order to realize all individuals’ full socio-economic potential.
With the financial and technical investments into the national statistical systems, this is the first of its kind for Tonga to include a Domestic Violence module into a National Survey. The MICS Survey which will be implemented in November 2019 will allow Tonga to track some indicators on Domestic Violence among many for the Sustainable Development Goals. The Kingdom of Tonga commits to maintaining the goal of zero preventable maternal deaths by 2030. Maternal mortality for Tonga remains low relative to other nations and at certain points we have already reached the target of zero. In spite of that, Tonga is committed to ensuring that the maternal mortality rates are at zero and will be sustained as such until 2030 and onward. Tonga is currently training midwives at the local Queen Salote School of Nursing and Allied Health with the aid of...
