Claudia García-Moreno leads the World Health Organization’s work on violence against women, including in humanitarian settings, based in the Department of Reproductive Health and Research. She has worked for 30 years in public health and global health policy, with a focus on women's health, sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. She worked as health adviser and then head of the Health Unit of Oxfam UK for 8 years covering both humanitarian and development work and then spent 3 years working on the International Conference on Population and Development. She joined WHO in 1985 and led work on gender and women’s health, coordinated the WHO Multi-Country Study on Women’s Health and Domestic Violence and co-led the development of the global and regional estimates on intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women, with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Under her leadership WHO has developed guidelines and tools for strengthening the health response to violence against women, engaged countries to address violence against women as a public health priority and in 2016 launched the Global plan of action to strengthen the role of the health sector in addressing violence, in particular against women and girls and against children. She is founder and past Chair of the Sexual Violence Research Initiative, co-chairs the Working Group on Violence against Women of the International Federation of ObstetriciansGynecologists (FIGO) and is Chair of the Independent Advisory Board of DFID’s research initiative, ‘What Works to prevent violence against women and girls?’. Claudia is a physician from Mexico with an MSc in Community Medicine from LSHTM.
