Eradication of Female Genital Mutilation by 2030.
Commitment description:We commit to accelerating efforts to ensure the global abandonment of the FGM practice by 2030 by ensuring that young women, girls, and the community actively stand against the practice. The empowerment of women and girls is widely recognized as key to development towards the attainment of SDG 5 on gender equality.
In the Kisii and Nyamira counties in Kenya, we strive to provide alternative rite-of-passage for girls not to undergo FGM through the holiday training program rolled-out during school holidays. The training program seeks to equip the girls and the community at large with information on the health risks and legislation related to FGM, important life skills as well as psychosocial support for those who have already undergone the cut.
In Somaliland, our work to prevent FGM focuses on identifying and mobilising religious and traditional leaders to take lead of the efforts to end FGM. Furthermore, we mainstream awareness raising on FGM into activities that support sustainable livelihood specifically in areas that suffer constant draughts.
