The Montevideo Consensus as a road map of the Principles of the Cairo Program of Action

Uruguay reaffirms its commitment to the Principles of the Cairo Plan of Action, and especially with the Montevideo Consensus and its Operational Guide as a road map to guide the policies of the countries of the region. In this sense, we gather the accelerators agreed in the Puebla Commitments, highlighting the importance of the agreements of our region in the defense of the Cairo Programme of Action in a global context in which expressions contrary to its principles are growing.

We make great progress in terms of legislation and public policies on issues related to the population and the development of people throughout their entire life cycle, understanding that the principles of Cairo and the Human Rights approach are essential for the achievement of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

Our commitment is focused on ensuring the implementation of the Montevideo Consensus and its Operational Guide, in its entirety, without leaving anyone behind attending to all the dimensions of injustice and inequality that characterize the problems of the region. Protect and guarantee the conditions for the full exercise of Human Rights, with special attention to sexual and reproductive rights, ensure comprehensive sexuality education programs, guarantee universal coverage of quality sexual and reproductive health and health services, including access to safe abortion, with a perspective of gender equity and generations.

We have important lessons learned in the articulation between the various actors committed to this agenda, and we highlight the relevance of Civil Society in the progress achieved by promoting the rights of broad sectors of the population such as women, the LGBTI population, Afro-descendants, indigenous people, people with disabilities and girls, boys, adolescents and young people in all its diversity.
 
Defending these achievements and avoiding setbacks is an inalienable ethical commitment.
