Commitment title:

To to raise awareness about the problem of prenatal selection by advocating the introduction of an explicit ban on gender-based and race-based abortion at the national and international level by year 2030.

Commitment description:

The aim of the presented Commitment is to fully implement the ICPD PA, which states in par. 4.23 that governments are urged to take the necessary measures to prevent prenatal sex selection. The Ordo Iuris Institute commits to advocate both at international and national levels the introduction of an explicit ban on gender and race-based abortion in biding legal documents. We will provide an expert and data-based knowledge to international bodies, by actively taking part in periodic reporting procedures in the UN Committees, organizing side-events at main conferences tackling the issues concerning women (i. e. CSW), providing expert analyzes to delegates, presenting proposals of resolutions condemning the prenatal selection and projects of laws introducing the explicit ban on gender and race-based abortion. As the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe stated in its Resolution 1829 (2011), millions of women kill their daughters prenatally as a consequence of regarding them to be a burden for their family. The problem is not limited to Asian countries, but can be observed in a number of countries all over the world. Sex is not the only reason of prenatal selection. As evidence shows, in many cases children are aborted because of their race. Both gender and race-based abortion violates many basic principles of human rights and provides one of the most tragic examples of discrimination, where millions of children are deprived of their lives at its very beginning just because of their sex or race.

Mode of engagement:
  • Policy and guidance
The Ordo Iuris Institute commits to advocate both at international and national levels the strengthening of the protection of human life on every stage of development and to help women and families in difficult situations.
