Key Actions for the Further Implementation of the Programme of Action of the ICPD, the outcomes of its reviews and Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development
Commitment description:In June 2019, at the Women Deliver Conference in Vancouver, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the Government of Canada will raise its funding to reach an average of $1.4 billion annually by 2023, to support women’s, adolescents’ and children’s health around the world. A 10-year commitment, this historic investment will support SRHR and maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health.
Of this commitment, an average of $700 million annually will be dedicated to SRHR. Canada’s comprehensive approach to SRHR will focus on reproductive health services, comprehensive sexuality education, family planning and contraceptives, safe and legal abortion and post-abortion care, the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence (including child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation and cutting), and advocacy activities for SRHR. This commitment reinforces Canadian leadership in global health.
Canadian civil society is a key partner in delivering on Canada’s commitment to SRHR. As part of Canada’s investment to promote the health and rights of women and girls around the world, Canada is providing up to $325 million from 2020 to 2025 for Canadian partners to support projects that improve integrated health services and information for women, adolescents and children. At least 75% of the funding will go to projects in sub-Saharan Africa and 50% of the funding will be allocated to projects that address the full range of SRHR, particularly for women and adolescent girls, and identified critical gap areas.
