Commitment title:

International Federation of Medical Students Associations Commitment to help advance zero unmet family planning needs

Commitment description:

The IFMSA is the largest student-led organization of 136 member organizations from 126 different countries globally, representing more than 1.3 million medical students. We affirm that the decision to choose the number, timing and spacing of children is a human right, essential to the achievement of sustainable development. The realization of this right for all is possible through access to family planning services in universal health coverage.

Therefore, to play our part as the future healthcare professionals in achieving zero unmet need for family planning information and services, and universal availability of quality, affordable and safe modern contraceptives, we commit, in one year following the Summit, to:

- Internationally promote IFMSA policy document on Access to Safe Abortion and address family planning as part of primary healthcare in IFMSA General Assembly 2019 in Rwanda;
- Carry out sessions on sexual and reproductive health and rights, including family planning and focusing on regional context in the Regional Meetings in Malawi, Lithuania,Brazil,Thailand and Jordan to at least 120 medical students;
- Carry out 5 Women’s Reproductive Health and Access to Safe Abortion workshops in the Africa, Americas, Asia Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean Region, training over 80 medical students;
- Celebrate the International Access to Safe Abortion Day throughout IFMSA, exploring the topic from SRHR,medical education,human rights,public health and exchanges perspectives.

The IFMSA believes that realization of SRHR begins with comprehensive sexuality education and that all people, especially women, should be empowered and supported in autonomous decision-making over their own bodies and formation of family through reproduction. We, as future doctors, believe that our duty not only includes the future of our individual patients, but also that of communities locally, nationally and globally, and with our power of youth will advance the ICPD+25 commitments.

Modes of engagement:
  • Policy and guidance
