Commitment title:

Intensify our efforts for the effective and accelerated implementation of the Cairo Programme of Action and its alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Commitment description:

I reaffirm the Cuban commitment to the Plan of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo 25 years ago. Importance given to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted in September 2015, which is more ambitious and comprehensive than its predecessor. Social development has a strong influence on economic development, fostering an increase in the qualification of the workforce, better health levels, the entry of women into the workforce and a spontaneous family planning policy. The existence of a government commission to respond to issues of population dynamics and a national ICPD monitoring mechanism composed of government agencies, academic and research centres and civil society. Health outcomes are an expression of universal coverage, with a single, public, accessible and free system based on primary health care, with community and intersectoral participation. Nobody is illiterate and our life expectancy at birth is 78.5 years – higher rates than in many developed countries. The National Sexual Health and Education Programme is being implemented, with a strong interest in dismantling the patriarchal structures that allow and impose a gap in relations between men and women. Today, the fundamental challenge facing the country in terms of population and development is population ageing, which means that 30 per cent of the population will be aged 60 or above in 2030. Cuba has shared the few resources it has to contribute to the social and economic development of many countries in the South, through international cooperation. Various cooperation programmes in 157 countries.

Modes of engagement:
  • Policy and guidance
