Enhancing knowledge of women and girls by informing them about accessible safe abortion practices in Terai/ Madhesh.
Commitment description:In the Madheshi community, there are mainly two types of target group needs information about legal safe abortion services. They are: i) Early union girls: Who may be unmarried and got pregnant. These groups especially we found in the higher secondary schools and colleges. ii) Women who got unwanted (unintended) pregnancy: These groups are especially found in our community, and they are highly coveted by many stigma and socio-culture problems. These two groups don't have information about legal safe abortion services, law and about the service providers. Only less percentage of the population has information. But there are also so many stigmas and cultural barriers to get services. And Registered service provider isn't available in the our community. The main cause of unsafe abortion practices in our community is a gap of knowledge on legalization and availability of safe abortion services, Stigma on abortion persists among community people, service providers, policymakers, Limited facilities, High unintended pregnancy and Low use of family planning and limited access to long-acting reversible contraception. Nepal has got a new constitution and it has federalism and it has three levels of government as Federal, Province, and Local. But in absence of complete clarity on how the safe abortion service gets integrated into the local government structure It has also been a challenge to address the safe abortion challenges locally. Therefore, The project intervention will be focused on two parts, One with local government to integrated and reform the new local policies and refine the safe abortion services accessible and free in locally and Another with the women and girls who don't have the knowledge of legalization and availability of safe abortion services locally in their own community.
Mode of engagement:
- Programmatic actionSHAKHI is a grassroots women-led feminist organization working among marginalized and poor community women and girls where they have a lack of information about SRHR and safe abortion. our main programmatic action will be to inform legal procedure.
