Best practices model on ending FGM in Tarime Mara Region- Tanzania.
Commitment description:share a best practices model, based on a holistic approach mixed with innovative aspects, particularly in the Alternative Rite of Passage that was developed, and in the provision of community-wide counselling/psychosocial support (also for FGM perpetrators). Focus is on constructive dialogue to make change happen. Not only girls/women are targeted, but also boys/men as (future) husbands and as crucial custodians of the patriarchal tradition. Main messages will be:
● A holistic approach targeting all actors involved works, though it needs long term involvement to ensure sustainable change
● Constantly checking the changing context and actors is needed to adapt relevant solutions and interventions
● Cross-border interventions (with Kenya) are needed to effectively address FGM within the Kuria community since they inhabit parts of Tanzania as well as Kenya
(5) (a) Zero sexual and gender-based violence and harmful practices, including zero child, early and forced marriage, as well as zero female genital mutilation; and (b) Elimination of all forms of discrimination against all women and girls, in order to realize all individuals’ full socio-economic potential.
